North York, originally a regional agricultural hub and collection of scattered independent communities to the north of the Old City of Toronto, is an administrative district of Toronto, having become a city in 1979. Before becoming an administrative district of Toronto in 1998, North York was a municipal City. The former North York Mayor—Mel Lastman—became the very first mayor of the new “Mega City” that Toronto became with North York in its addition. Many annual community events are held in North York at its largest civic venue: Mel Lastman Square, named after the popular mayor. The square also holds the North York Public Library, offices, restaurants, shops, and impressively its own station on the Yonge-University line.
You will find two out of five of Toronto’s major shopping malls in North York: Yorkdale Shopping Centre, and Fairview Mall. North York is also home to a few major hospitals, as well as college and university campuses. The Ontario Science Centre, Black Creek Pioneer Village, and the Toronto Aerospace Museum are attractions found in the city. Developed after the expansion of the subway system to Finch Station, North York City Centre is located on Yonge St. Between Finch and Sheppard Avenue, and it is the central business district in North York.
The charming neighbourhoods of North York are subject to the City of Toronto recommendations and restrictions on water use. The City recommends that you water no more than once a week, and during off peak hours, between 11:00 pm – 8:00 am, and during an “Outdoor Water Use Advisory” the City requests that all residential properties and businesses voluntarily stop watering the lawn and other non-essential outdoor water use, which applies to those in North York. If there is an active water use advisory, it will be issued by the General Manager of Toronto Water, however it is not a formal By-law that bans lawn watering.
