Home > Services > Sodding Sodding (Lawn installation) As growing landscaping company, we are proud to provide our sodding (lawn/ sod replacement) services to Greater Toronto Area residential and commercial properties. Sodding (Lawn/ sod installation) is the quickest and most reliable mean of establishing a lawn. Sod is the grass that is cut from a well-established field of grass and placed at other locations. Sod covers the soil completely and virtually eliminates evaporation of water from the soil and loss of soil by erosion. Sod from local farms is ready for planting when it is 12-14 months old. It needs to be mature enough so the pieces will hold together. Thinly cut sod will root faster than sod with a lot of soil beneath the foliage and thin thatch layer. Booking for the 2024 Sodding services season is still OPEN! Secure your spot for new sod installation! Book sod installation! For sod and labor Benefits from sodding are: Provides immediate erosion control on a steep slope; Fresh and healthy sod increases the property value and overall aesthetic of the home; Reduces pollution level and generates oxygen; Absorbs sunlight and helps cooling your house during the summer season; Reduces noise level and creates safe environment for kids and pets; A high quality turf/ sod is available for use much more quickly than with other methods and there is less investment of time and work by the homeowner; Sod can be installed almost anytime (in contrast to seeding ) the ground isn’t frozen from mid-April through the end of November. Green Warriors avoid installing sod so late in the winter that the root system doesn’t have time to penetrate the soil adequately before the soil freezes; Sod installation process for more sodding videos Our Sodding projects sodding10 sodding9 sodding2 sodding8 sodding7 sodding6 sodding5 sodding3 Show More Sodding projects Follow our recent sodding projects on @greenwarriorslandscaping The installation process of new sod: 1. Remove and dispose of any existing grass/ lawn by trimming or cutting it with special equipmen t (commercial grade sod cutter). The sod cutter is a machine with a blade that is inserted into the turf and peels off up to 3 inches of sod. 2. Adding topsoil and leveling . As grass is a living organism, it needs a bed of healthy topsoil to root in. Also very important in the sod installation is to ensure that the land slopes correctly to avoid any puddling of water after a rainfall. 3. Rolling the area and final levelling. A sod roller is a heavy drum that is filled with water and can be pushed, using a handle, across the lawn to help the sod make good contact with the soil. 4. Laying down new sod (turf rolls) and rolling again to remove air pockets under the sod strips and to press the roots firmly into the soil. If air pockets are not removed, they can potentially result in drying of the root system, causing dead spots on the surface. Our sod is always fresh, cut out, and delivered to your home on the same day of installation project. 5. Watering the new lawn. Watering is the most essential part of a healthy lawn. • How to care for new sod | New grass care tips and instruction | Green Warriors Landscaping

Home > Learn > New sod care How to care for new sod? Congratulations on your new lawn! If you are reading this material it most likely that your new sod is already installed. To establish your new sod it’s extremely important to take proper care of it for the next 6-8 weeks. The following steps will help you maintain a thick lawn after the sod is installed. These recommendations are for Cool Season turfgrasses such as KentuckyBluegrass , which Green Warriors Landscaping team is using during the sodding process . Booking for 2022 Sodding season is now OPEN! Secure your spot for new sod installation! Avoid traffic! Keep pet and foot traffic on the new lawn to a minimum until it has completely rooted (usually 4 weeks), this can be checked by pulling on the end of a piece of sod to check for resistance, indicating the roots have taken to the soil. When stepping on the sod in the first week is necessary for proper watering, start at the farthest corner and back your way off the lawn to prevent stepping on wet sod, which causes greater soil compaction. How to water new sod? Proper watering is the single most important step for maintaining a new sod lawn. Without sufficient watering, the grass wilts, roots dry, grass turns brown and the sod strips shrink from moisture loss. Water the sod twice a day for the first 2 weeks after laying the sod; Water the lawn for 20 to 30 minutes at a time in each area, or however long is needed to ensure the water penetrates a few inches into the soil beneath the sod. Liftback a corner of the sod in several places throughout the lawn to check for water penetration. During the first 2-3 weeks, the bottom of the sod should never be dry! Be careful to prevent over-watering by paying attention to standing water on flat areas. - Sod installation - Sodding FAQ - Sodding promotions - Irrigation system - Landscape Lighting - Sodding Warranty - Articles Don't forget to monitor your new sod for the signs of dryness and use a hose to water the areas that your sprinklers don't reach. Edges and sod seams are the most susceptible to drying out. Please give them more water ! If you start to see large gaps between the rolls of sod and edges become yellow it means the sod started to shrink! You need to water it more! The edges of the turf that touch concrete need more frequent watering as the concrete sucks the moisture out of sod. Once the roots are established and you have mowed the lawn for the first time, then you can likely go to daily watering early in the morning. Be careful about watering grass late evening or at night, especially with high humidity. This creates a problem with the lawn staying damp for too long. Most diseases need prolonged moisture as a necessary ingredient for the disease to begin. When watering a new lawn or mature lawn, irrigate early to late morning. Try not to allow the soil to go into the evening in a very wet condition. Weeds! Weeds are difficult to eradicate after they have begun to spread. Many products are out there that will claim that they can permanently get rid of them, however weeds are ALWAYS going to be a part of your landscape if there is wind that blows seeds onto your lawn or the birds cast them in their droppings. The truth is that the most reliable method is to use some manual labour to control weeds. Even if the smallest amount of root remains from a weed where there are nutrients in the ground to feed it, and then the weeds can grow again and spread. When to mow new sod (grass). The sod can be mowed when it is rooted. Wait until the grass reaches a height of at least 3 inches before mowing (about in 2-3 weeks after planting). Be sure not to remove more than 1/3 of the grass blade. Most grasses should be cut at a height of 2.5-3.5 inches. The longer the better. Think of the grass blades as solar panels for the plant. The longer the blades the more energy the plant can store. Energy is stored in the roots as carbohydrates. Longer grass on the top = Deeper roots. Deeper roots allow the grass to find more water and nutrients and be healthier in general. Expect to mow the sod once weekly through summer and into fall. Sharpen the mower blades frequently to ensure a clean cut without tearing the blades -- torn blades are more susceptible to disease. Do not mow the grass when it is wet. Remove all clippings. How to fertilize newly installed sod. A slow-release high nitrogen granular fertilizer should be applied no sooner than 4 weeks after the sod has been installed. Fertilizing before the recommended 30-day window could cause yellow patches in your lawn, due to the shallow root system. Aeration! You should hold off on aerating your new lawn until the roots are fully established. This could be the fall in some cases, or the following spring in others. Although sodding helps to reduce the number of weeds, it will not get rid of them completely. The weeds will grow again (their root system reaches up to several feet long). After sodding, it is necessary to take proper care of the new lawn. Manually removing the weed will remove it in its entirety from the ground— roots and all. When you remove the whole plant then it will not regrow in that the same location. Removing the weeds individually will also ensure that your desirable plants are not damaged in the process. It is best to remove the weed immediately after it pops up, before the root system is established. Please contact us immediately if you have any concerns regarding proper care and maintenance of the new grass. • Lawn Aeration | Toronto | Green Warriors Landscaping

Home > Learn > What is aeration What is AERATION? Core Aeration is basically perforating the soil as well as the thatch covering soil. A lawn aerator removes small portions of soil from your lawn in cylinder shaped plugs, allowing thick, compacted soil to expand into the vacated spaces as the grass grows. Core aeration allows air to get into the root system, breaks up the compaction of soil, and allows water and nutrients into the root zone . A regularly aerated lawn will encourage a healthy plethora of microorganisms that can decompose organic material and lawn thatch. BENEFITS OF CORE AERATION: Improves Grass Root System Reduces Soil Compaction Encourages new growth from your existing lawn Breaks Down Thatch Reduces Weeds Over Time Saves Water & Reduces Run Off Stimulates Beneficial Micro-Organisms Improves Germination of Grass Seed WHEN TO AERATE? The best time to aerate your lawn is during the growing season. Aerating when the grass is actively growing will encourage the roots of the grass to grow back in the holes left by the aerator, so your lawn won’t be left with empty spaces in the soil for very long.

  • Landscape outdoor lighting | Toronto and GTA | Green Warriors Landscaping

Home > Services > Landscape lighting Landscape outdoor lights installation Light Up your nights with Green Warriors Landscaping Enhance your landscape with outdoor lighting for beautiful after-dark curb appeal. Landscape lighting can be what your property needs to enhance its features and stand out. Landscape outdoor lighting is a small feature that can make your landscaping features really stand out. Landscaping lights, also known as “low voltage” outdoor lighting are weatherproof and the lights can be used to illuminate your garden pathways, flower beds, specific trees, alongside driveways, along retaining walls, walkways, and more. “Low Voltage” refers to the 12volt power these lighting systems require, which is much lower than the household standard of 120 volts. The right type of lights placed in the right areas can dramatically change the look of your home for the better, not only making it a more comfortable place to spend your time, but also increasing its overall value. The addition of landscape lighting to your yard not only extends curb appeal to all hours, but additionally provides extra safety by illuminating the dark corners and paths on your property—which not only prevents accidents by lowering the risk of injury with the added visibility, but also lowers the risk of crime. Landscape outdoor lighting installation even helps you get more out of your backyard, allowing barbecues and parties to last well after dark. Call Green Warriors to book your landscape outdoor lighting installation project in Toronto and Greater Toronto Area. Booking for 2023 Landscape Lights Installation is OPEN ! Benefits of Landscape Lights Installation Add your home’s curb appeal. Add home value and increase interest from homebuyers. The right type of lights placed in the right areas can dramatically change the look of your home for the better, not only making it a more comfortable place to spend your time, but also increasing its overall value Increase personal safety on your property after the sun goes down. Your family and visitors to your property can safely walk through and around your property without tripping or stumbling on unseen hazards Boost home security. Prevent Burglaries And Vandalism. Allow outdoor events to continue past sunset. Landscape lighting can significantly expand your living space while extending your time for recreation, relaxation, and entertaining outdoors Low energy cost. Running your lighting system will be very inexpensive because all the lights we use are low-voltage, meaning that you’re using off only one transformer to run all your outdoor lights. The exact energy cost will, of course, vary depending on how many lights you have installed and the overall size and scope of the project. Get Free Quote! Landscape Lighting Has Two Main Components Transformer Transformers come in a variety of sizes to match the number of fixtures in the systems, and varying quality of construction. Fixtures The fixtures are the final and most exciting part of the landscape lighting system. There are two basic types of fixtures: path lights and spot lights. Spot lights are generally fairly hidden and are used to shine outdoor light from the base of a tree or shrub upwards inside the foliage to create a stunning nighttime effect! Path lights are very decorative lamps that are seen both night and day. Because they are exposed and very much a part of your landscape decor, many customers enjoy picking the style and colour of path lamps themselves just as they would front door hardware, or trim and mouldings inside their house. A landscape lighting plan may seem intimidating, but it doesn’t need to be a difficult undertaking. Whether you are considering brightening up your yard to spend extra time outdoors with friends and family, to increase the market value of your house, or even for the added security, there are some important things to consider: 1. What do you want to highlight? What you love about your home and landscape will be accentuated with outdoor lighting. What are your favourite parts of the house or garden that you want to bring to life? Unique elements in the architecture of your property can be illuminated, but you сan also use the lighting in a functional way—guiding lights along your paths, deck, stairs, walkways, and driveway will make it safer to travel those areas after daylight hours. Consider what you want to leave in the dark, because when it comes to elegant landscape lighting—less is more. Don’t listen to the instinct that tells you to light up each and every dark corner because, unless it is for security, it could wash-out your yard and run up the electricity bill. Tasteful lighting will be a play with the light and the darkness, and it will shade and highlight the aspects of the landscape that are asking to be featured or subdued, creating a distinguished atmosphere and making the space feel special while bringing about a dynamic contrast from the daytime look and feel of the area. A well-lit space will create an inviting contrast at night to enjoy your beautiful yard for extended hours, and a well-lit entryway will safely navigate members of your family and friends to your home. 2. What type of lights you will need. The main types of lights used in landscapes are spotlights (or up-lights), and path lights. Path lights are, of course, primarily used for lighting paths and walkways, or defining the edges of your garden, whereas spotlights direct their beam upwards to illuminate a standing focal point such as a tree or architectural feature. For best results you would want to use a combination of both types of lights in your landscape. In general, the goal of outdoor lighting is to illuminate without being seen. The light source itself (with the exception of path lights) is not the feature on display, although they are designed to be decorative with lots of varieties available in different finishes. In-ground lights, called spotlights or up-lights (sometimes referred to as a well light), are usually in the shape of a circle that is installed directly into the ground, with a beam directed upwards to illuminate artifacts above them, displaying the sophistication of a tree or statue after dusk settles in the yard. They can also be used to light up paths, walkways, and driveways to heighten the visibility and bring about safe passage after dark. Up-lights can capture characteristics not visible during the day. Focus on lighting up features that hold a strong presence in your landscape, and avoid the small and short things that will be lost in the brilliance that is cast upwards. They are also used to wash light up stone walls. Path lights create light markers that form a line, effortlessly improving curb appeal as they illuminate a walkway, path, or driveway to safely navigate in the dark. They are a basic landscape feature that every yard would benefit having. Consider the height of the path lights when choosing to install them—for an even luminescense, 12-15 inches is the optimal height, and for the borders the light should be approximately within one foot of the sides of the walkway/path being illuminated. To steer clear of overcrowding, notice the diameter of the light cast around the fixture itself and install the neighbouring fixture outside of it. Since path lights remain exposed outside, make sure to choose the ones made of materials that will resist corrosion. Be sure to consider a design that will withstand the weather outdoors as well as enhance the visible appeal of your property. 3. Determine the colour temperature that you would like to have illuminating your landscape. What sort of atmosphere would you like to incorporate into the aesthetic outside your home? The colour sets the tone, and it is important to keep it consistent for an even, coordinated look—a vast range of colour temperatures are available with many options to choose from. The advancement of LED technology has afforded us the opportunity to select from a wide array of options to personify your space with your preferred style and temperature of illumination, with many different shades of lights available. Lighting is measured in Degrees Kelvin (K), and the higher the number, the bluer (and cooler) the hue of the light. For example, from about 3500K to 4100K, you will find a bright white light. Going below 3500K will give the space a warmer look and feel. Brightness, which is measured in “lumens” (previously known as “wattage”), will not be affected by which colour temperature you choose, it simply tells us how much light is being radiated by the light source—you can find fixtures with adjustable lumen output to control the brightness yourself. The colour temperature of the lighting will play a role in determining how many lights you will need to use to create the brightness you want in your yard at night. 4. Check if the necessary outlets are available to install lighting fixtures. In general, most of the newly constructed homes come already equipped with outlet sources outside (usually on the right and left corners of the house), but you’d want to check to make sure they are available. It is necessary to contact a licensed electrician if you are unable to locate them. Make sure you are working with the right voltage for your transformer. Lighting up your landscape. It can be overwhelming to consider the many types of lights and spaces you could illuminate in your landscape. One of the ways to draw some conclusions about where the lights will look good is for you to go out at night with a high-powered flashlight and play around with it to check out what works and what doesn’t. Use your imagination—as there are limitless possibilities when lighting up your nighttime landscape. Consider these landscape lighting effects for your nightscape: Up-lighting is a technique to light up a tree (or wall) from ground level. It allows the tree to show off its canopy or its trunk, depending on client preference and the distance at which the fixture will be placed. If you have an irrigation system installed, it would be better to use fixtures with a convex lens so that the water runs off the light. Silhouetting is an effect made when a spread light is placed between a fountain/sculpture or plant and a structure behind it, which makes the object stand as a dark silhouette against a soft white background cast by the lighting from a hidden spot. It is a great way to highlight dramatic shapes in the nightscape of your yard that are invisible during the day. Shadowing is the reverse of silhouetting, and washes a feature (like a tree or a statue) to cast its shadow onto a wall or a fence. The light is placed between the main vantage point and the feature being lit, with the light aimed at the feature. This effect works best when there is a flat surface, like a wall, behind the feature in order to catch the shadows that are cast, but it will also lend to a softly sombre atmosphere. Moonlighting is created when fixtures are placed high in a tree and aimed downward to look like the full moon is lighting up the nightscape. It is an excellent technique to down-light a patio, where the trees can cast the shadows of their leaves and branches onto the hardscape for interesting visual appeal. The best colour temperature for this effect will be 4000K, which most closely resembles natural moonlight. Pathlighting , at its most basic, lights up and along a path to help navigate the dark walkway safely. A carefully lit path will make sure all of the obstacles are well-lit and visible, but can also add some interest and adventure to the atmosphere of the landscape by making the pathway more inviting to the viewer. Just be sure not to place them too close together to avoid the “runway” vibe. To simulate a path light, hold a piece of white cardboard (or something reflective) over the flashlight and place it by the path to test the placement appeal. Grazing highlights interesting stonework. This is especially useful in a hardscape-heavy yard. Up-lights, installed right next to a wall with their beams directed up the structure, will cast dramatic but delicate shadows that accentuate the texture of the stone in the play of light and dark. Grazing can be done up or down a surface, and adds an upscale touch to the property. Spotlighting highlights a focal point, such as a statue, water fountain, or whatever your favourite feature in the yard is. Cross lighting lights a feature from two sides, but be careful not to overdo the lighting for a washed out look. If done tastefully, this effect can highlight a feature more prominently and at the same time soften the look. Washing is not the same as “washing out”. This effect is captured by placing the light source to the side of what you wanted illuminated, and letting the light “wash” over the feature, bathing a hedge or a wall, for example, in a soft, ambient glow of the light. Down-lighting from a structure can be used in different ways with fixtures installed along the house roof line, in trees, on garden walls, patio covers, etc., and is used to highlight focal points you want to emphasize or to light up entrances and doorways. Down-lighting can also be done from a hardscape—lights are installed upside down in benches, wall windows, or countertops to give subtle lighting at night that gently defines the area they’re set up in with a surrounding glow. These light fixtures are hidden during the day and only make themselves known at night by their effect. Notes about outdoor lighting: • Shadows on a staircase make it hard to judge distance and height of the steps, which makes them a hazard—when lighting up a staircase, make sure to install lights at the bottom of the steps as well as the top, which will fill in the shadows and make the steps safe. • Extra-large trees look their best with extra lights. They will be better accentuated with two types of lighting (such as moonlighting, and up-lighting), or just extra up-lights aimed at the tree to show off its grandeur. • LED technology has the longevity and lower operating costs to be the standard for lighting up your landscape. It will funnel away the heat that is generated by the lights, which is what leads to a longer lifespan. Features such as an adjustable beam spread are also available. • Colour temperature works best when it is paired in the same colour family as colour of the object or feature you are working with. Warmer lighting goes best with warmer tones like reds, browns, cedar trees, natural-coloured stonework and walls, trees with red, orange, yellow foliage like oaks and maple. Cool colours work well with contemporary structures, neutral colours or dark grays. This temperature accents the plants in your landscape to look their finest at night. Use bright white daylight (5000K) lighting to lend beauty to evergreen shrubs and trees. • The height of your trees will determine the lumen output: Smaller trees (6-10 ft.) — 80-120 lumens, which is the lowest level and works just as well for shrubs and bushes. Medium sized trees (up to 25 ft.) — 140-180 lumens. Large trees (up to 35 ft.) — 230-270 lumens. Very large trees (50-80 ft. or taller) — 350-1000 lumens. • Be considerate about the height of the illumination and the glare, and it applies for your neighbours as well as to avoid problems for driving near your landscape at night. Frosted or shielded glass can prevent glare. • How to measure the lawn quickly | Lot size for sod | Green Warriors Landscaping

Home > Learn > How to measure the lawn How to measure the lawn Booking for 2021 Sodding season is now OPEN! Secure your spot for new sod installation! Example: Radius ( r ) is 5 ft. 5 ft x 5 ft x 3.14 = 78.5 sq.ft Dandelion Jelly Ingredients: dandelions - 400 flowers; water - 1 l; sugar - 1,2 kg; citric acid - 0.5 tsp. Step 1 Pick your flowers. Be sure to pick your #dandelions where you know they have not been sprayed. Dandelions for #jam come at a time when they bloom. Yellow and fragrant. Green sepals and flower base do not need, they will add bitterness of milky juice - only yellow petals will go to the jam. The most safe option is to take scissors with you. Straight from the flowering arrow, cut the yellow flowers But, if you are easier to break off entire heads, you will spend the same circumcision procedure at home, sitting at the table Step 2 Fill the flowers with water and put on fire. Want to emphasize: flowers are not washed! The whole point is that all the pollen and nectar are included in the jam, and not washed and went to the sewer. Just fill the flowers with cold water. Dozens of different bugs were hiding in the petals, they would crawl out. Do not be scared, take them away)) Bring water with petals to a boil and reduce the fire to a minimum. Boil for 10 minutes. Step 3 Add citric acid to the boiling broth, stir and leave to boil on low heat for another 20-25 minutes. When cooking dandelion flowers, the whole house is filled with honey fragrance - beauty! Step 4 Remove the pan from the fire and strain the broth. Squeeze the petals, and ... everything, they played their role and we do not need it anymore, you can throw it away. Step 5 Add sugar to the broth, stir and again put on the fire. As soon as the broth boils, you will immediately see how it turned from a dull yellow into a transparent and beautiful one. Again reduce the heat and cook for 30-40 minutes. The longer, the more jam becomes. As a result, you will get a "dandelion honey" - thick and viscous. The color of jam from dandelions is transparent, slightly yellowish, very beautiful, and its taste is remarkable. It is well kept in glass jars under plastic covers. Certainly, in the presence of allergies or individual intolerance to the body, you should consult your health practitioner. Jam from dandelions should be used with caution. - Sod installation - Sodding FAQ - Sodding promotions - Irrigation system - Landscape Lighting - Sodding Warranty - Articles Do you have any questions about lawn measurements? Reach us now at (416) 823-4099 or (905) 771- 5339 ! We are prompt at answering our phone and email. • Sod installtion in the fall? Great idea!| Why late fall is good for sodding?| Green Warriors

Home > Learn > Sodding in the fall Sodding in the fall It’s a perfect time to install new sod! Most people (erringly) believe that spring or summer is the only time that the new grass will grow, but there are benefits to sodding in the fall. It is a great time to lay down sod. Autumn sod installations are successful because of the unique growing cycle of the grass. Logically, spring and summer are associated with vegetative growth as its the time of the year where plants are greenest and growing the most. Grass is a little bit different because during the peak summer heat, with water harder to come by, grass slows down its growth and can actually go dormant throughout the hot and dry conditions. It does this to conserve resources in order to survive the summer, even with the abundant sunlight available. It takes a LOT of consistent watering to maintain the grass with the moisture it needs to resist its tendency to go dormant (or dry up completely) during the summer. Booking for 2022 Sodding and Landscaping projects is OPEN! Secure your spot! Book Now! For sod and labor All of our fall sod installations have their warranty extended to the end of May of the following year. Fall, however, brings cooler weather and less moisture loss to evaporation. It is simpler to care for newly installed sod as it requires less maintenance with the lower temperatures and the extra precipitation during the cooler season. Where spring leads to vigorous leaf growth to recover from winter and take in all of the sunlight available, fall growth for grass tends to focus on roots. This is due to the upcoming winter; the grass will grow its roots deeper into the ground in preparation for dormancy. This is perfect for new sod because that is exactly what you want it to do—grow deep roots to establish itself. The faster the roots establish, the fasted you have a lush, beautiful lawn, and with a fall installation, you are good to go right away, and get to enjoy the fresh lawn right away next spring! Any time of the year (besides the obvious winter when the ground is frozen) is a good time to lay down new sod. Fall, however, is a great time, as the bonus during this season is that fall is FAR less busy to schedule a sod installation, since most people try to book it during the spring or early summer seasons. If you are thinking about installing your new grass during the fall, but you’re worried that the grass might not have enough time to establish itself before the weather gets too cold, we have an extended warranty in place for your peace of mind: all of our autumn sod installations have their warranty extended to the end of May of the following year to ensure that the grass is growing successfully after winter dormancy.
