Remove and dispose of any existing grass/ lawn by trimming or cutting it with special equipmen t (commercial grade sod cutter). The sod cutter is a machine with a blade that is inserted into the turf and peels off up to 3 inches of sod. 2. Adding topsoil and leveling . As grass is a living organism, it needs a bed of healthy topsoil to root in. Also very important in the sod installation is to ensure that the land slopes correctly to avoid any puddling of water after a rainfall. 3. Rolling the area and final levelling. A sod roller is a heavy drum that is filled with water and can be pushed, using a handle, across the lawn to help the sod make good contact with the soil. 4.
